How to choose the right person to run your business
As a small business grows, there are many critical decisions to make, including how to choose the right person to run the business. It is a challenging task for small business owners to take a step back and leave the business in the hands of another person to run it.
From our perspective, there are three key elements to consider during the process of choosing the right person to run your small business.
First, you will need to define what the role entails for the person that is going to run your business. It is imperative to set expectations before putting anyone in the role. As a small business owner, you need to know how much are you wanting to step back from the business before picking someone to fill in your responsibilities.
Once you define the role, you need to then select and hire the talent. This process can be made easier if you have someone in mind that is already working at your business. During the interview, let the candidate lead the conversation as it is an important requirement for a leader. Engage the candidate by asking them to present their ideas on how they are going to run the business in the next few months or years.
The last step is induction. Create a plan to bring the chosen candidate on board. Start getting them involved, set expectations and invest in training them.
